The Undergraduate Named Scholarship Program celebrates the life of Howard S. Freedlander, C’67

Howard Freedlander was a true champion of Penn, serving as President of the Class of 1967 and a stalwart fundraiser and supporter of undergraduate of financial aid for decades. Howard believed in the personal impact of philanthropy and Penn connections, making time to meet with so many Class of ’67 scholarship recipients since the scholarship’s inception in 1997. Howard was also instrumental in the creation of the Michael San Phillip Memorial Scholarship, established in 2002 by the Class of 1967 in memory of Michael V. San Phillip, W’67, who lost his life in the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001.

It was singularly important for Howard to give back, paving the way down Locust Walk for the generations of Quakers who came after him. Howard’s commitment to undergraduate financial aid, and advancing this cause with classmates, led to record breaking reunion fundraising for the Class of 1967 as well as many members of the Class establishing their own endowed scholarships. Howard’s passion for increasing access to a Penn education did not go unnoticed and in 2016 the Howard S. Freedlander Endowed Scholarship was established by anonymous donors, honoring Howard’s exceptional commitment to Penn, his classmates, and current and future Penn students.

The Named Scholarship Program honors Howard’s memory – his dedication to his family, spirit of community engagement and philanthropy, and love for Penn have and will continue to inspire so many.

Gifts in memory of Howard and his legacy of service and philanthropy to Penn may be made to the Howard S. Freedlander Endowed Scholarship.
